There are many benefits to living a simple life… here are just a few.
If we live a frugal life and need little, then we have less stress and that means we have less cortisol and adrenalin flowing through our body… and that means a powerful immune system that prevents disease, thus we live longer and feel more at peace.
What good is it to work long hours to have more… only to be stressed out to the max and end up dying early. Many a great person at the end of their life wondered why they forgot to live in the moment. In fact my father died of a stress heart attack at the age of 57… no one needs to do that.
When we live a frugal life we also help the planet and thus we feel good… and that creates endorphins in our body that create serotonin in our brains and thus we feel happy. To create a better world we have to think about what makes life better on this plane… is it more stuff? Or is it creating a healthy planet? Each choice makes a difference in the workings of our body and our peace of mind… which creates stress or inner peace and health.
When we grow our own chemical free organic food, without chemicals in them that create havoc in our bodies, which creates chronic disease and more stress… we feel more at peace. And when we no longer depend upon needing others, instead working in collaboration with others creating a community of love, care, and cooperation… there is a flood of serotonin our brain… thus we feel happy and our bodies are full of vitality and energy.
A simple life creates balance… and balance creates a healthy life. Thus when we feel in balance with the planet, with our own life, and with our community we feel good and that translates into contentment and deep seated feelings of peace… thus our bodies reflect that feeling of inner peace with health.
Thus when we stop doing, just for the sake of doing, and know deep down in our heart that what we are doing in our garden, in our home, in our community is making a difference. Instead of spending endless hours in front of the TV or on-line… we get out and get on our knees and push dirt around helping another living creature grow… that eventually helps us grow. Being directly connected to the cycle of life is very important for feelings of contentment and good health.
Thus we feel more at peace, and there are many studies showing that when we connect to the deep loamy soil of mother earth in a physical manner… of really getting down on our hands and knees we feel better. And have a more cohesive feeling of belonging to something important and a deep sense of connectedness.
There are innumerable health benefits to living a simple life. In Mount Athos Greece there is a monastery in which men decide to live the monastic life. It’s not easy to getting accepted into this monastery, but if they do they come with their preexisting health condition of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and more.
Interestingly after a couple of years of working hard long hours, praying, chanting, singing, sleeping short hours, and only eating what they can grow on the island… these men become very healthy… in fact disease of any kind is pretty much nonexistent. There is a great television special on Mount Athos that aired on CBS on 60 Minutes, if you are interested you might watch it, just google “Mount Athos cbs 60 minutes” and it will come up – there is also part 2 and extras there to watch.
Now people are finding that homes are too large, and people are building small homes that are easy to put together, but have everything two people need. Take a look at tumbleweed homes or some of the other small home plans that are on the market. People want to have a smaller impact on the environment, less to care for, much lower monthly utilities, no mortgage, and this means less stress… which creates peace of mind and body.
None of this is new – Gandhi, Henry David Thoreau, St. Francis of Assisi, Tolstoy, Albert Schweitzer, Rabindranath Tagore, Buddha, John the Baptist, Lao-tzu, Confucius, the Quakers, and many more have exalted the health benefits and power of living a simple life.
Simplify your life… feel more at peace… and have great health.
