Don’t Throw that Mango Skin Away – It’s Good For You!

Everyone knows about the health benefits of mangos… but did you know that mango skin has many health benefits? That’s right mango skin is a powerhouse of healing agents… don’t throw it away!

Mango Skins are full of compounds that regulate cholesterol and fatty acids in the body. According to a study done at Queensland University these compounds connect with receptors in our cells called PPARs that control fats and cholesterol in our blood.

Also Mango Skin has the ability to regulate blood glucose levels too according to the same study.  Mango Skin has more antioxidants than the mango itself so don’t throw it out… eat it!

One of the compounds in Mango Skin is Quercetin which helps to prevent cancer and also prevents cellular oxidation and damage. Mango Skin also contains another powerful antioxidant called norathyriol which helps to get rid of free radicals and thus slow the aging process and keep your body young.

And Mango Skin contains mangiferin, which binds with excess iron in the body thus preventing cellular oxidative damage (remember only the excess iron not what you need).

Plus it has been notice that Mango Skin contains resveratrol which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-aging agent that’s found in grapes and red wine. If we get too much glucose formed in the body by eating fruits without the skin this causes a flood of glucose. If this is not regulated as in diabetes it can cause many problems… so it’s important that we eat as many fruits as possible with the skin on for the fiber and the antioxidants.

Mango peel also contains carotenoids and anthocyanins that are powerful antioxidants… and they both help with preventing cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. And they also contain polyphenols like that found in Green Tea which is very healthy. And compared to man made antioxidant compounds Mango Peel had much more disease fighting potential.

Also Mango Peel contains very high amounts of Omega 3 and 6 oils that prevent cardiovascular disease and help make your skin look great… and at the same time lowers cholesterol and triglycerides.

Mango Skin also contains Lutein for preventing macular degeneration… and kaempferol, caffeic acid, gallic acid, tannins, and xanthone which are all great antioxidants and anti-cancer agents.

Studies show that eating mangos with the skin can help with weight loss… especially Nan Doc Mai and Irwin varieties. Compounds found in the skin of these mangos prevent fat from forming in cells thus helping you to lose weight.

Also boiling a few mango skins in water is a great way to get rid of indigestion, diarrhea, and stomach aches, ulcers, colitis, and also helps with inflammation of the GI tract in general. And Mango Skin is a good natural treatment for morning sickness.

And Mango Skin has lots of fiber and works well for treating constipation and thus helping to create a healthy environment for probiotic bacteria to grow.

Many cultures eaten mangos with the skin on… it’s just natural for them and in India green mangos are man into chutney. But Mango Skin also contains urushiol which some people may be allergic too… so check and see if you have a reaction. Take a taste, if you don’t have any kind of tingling feeling on your lips or tongue… have some Mango Skin.

So don’t peel that mango… eat it with the skin on and be healthy!
