“12 Ways to Eat Slowly… and Enjoy Your Meals More!”

In the west we tend to eat fast food, gulp down our food, and run to the next meeting and end up with indigestion.

In Europe they take time and enjoy their food, dinner can take hours. They have some wine and have friends to talk to… and the conversation makes the evening a wonderful event.

Eating in Italy

We were in Italy and Spain and the evenings were wonderful, people sat down for dinner late and did not get up from dinner for hours. Lots of wine, lots of conversation… it was a wonderful way of living. I should say “It Was Truly Being Alive and Enjoying the Moment”.

On the average we eat way to fast here in the states.

Here are some advantages of eating slowly – you lose weight, you get more nutrition out of your food, you feel full and thus don’t eat as much, you don’t get indigestion, you become more hydrated because you drink more water, you feel better about eating… and you enjoy your life much more.

Here are a few things you can do to eat more slowly.

* Don’t eat in front of the TV, people who eat in front of the TV eat fast.

* Give yourself an certain amount of time to eat… perhaps a 1/2 hour or one hour, that way you won’t feel that you need to rush off to get things done.

* If you need to set a timer and don’t look at the time… only react when the timer goes off.

* Make meals events… food is not just putting on the feed bag and getting through it as fast as possible. Slow down! Have you ever watched a dog eat… they gulp down their food because over eons they have been conditioned to eat as fast as possible so no other animal comes along and takes their food. Well that’s not the case with you… slow down… take time… enjoy your food.

* Join a slow food group, or slow cooking group, there are lots of them around the country that gather weekly to enjoy slow cooked meals.

*Look at why you eat fast? Did you learn to eat fast from watching someone else eat fast? Was it because in school you only had 10 minutes to eat and you gulped down your food? Was it because you wanted to get to the next thing and get it done? Think about it… and tell yourself it’s time to let go of that and slow down.

* Be present when eating, feel the food in your mouth, taste the food, feel the textures of the food, smell the food, be cognisant of your chewing, eat and think about your eating… not what you’re going to do next.

* It goes back to what someone once said, “Wash the dishes to wash the dishes, not to run off and watch TV”. Be present while eating, it’s your life.

* Invite friends for lunch, dinner, and even for breakfast. I know people who’ve made a commitment to inviting someone to lunch at least 2 or 3 times a week. That way they sit, chat, and enjoy their meal and have time to catch up.

* Be mindful that this is your life and you can gulp down your food and not feel good about it… or you can be present while eating and slow down every bite.

* Make a list of all the flavours you’re tasting in your food, then a list of all the textures… this process will slow down your eating.

* After every mouth full of food drink a little water, this will also slow you down.

*Also change your way of thinking about food, if you just think of it as something you need to get you through… then you are not going to enjoy it and slow down. Learn to love what you are eating and get every moment of pleasure you can from eating.

Then there are devices that dentists have that make it impossible to swallow large amounts of food, it will slow you down… but it’s not something I recommend. Remember it takes about 20 minutes for your mind to register that you are full, and you need at least 20 minutes to eat… and I prefer much longer.

Slow down and enjoy life… life it’s very short!
