The Relaxed Soul on “True Sacrifice”

One day a rich man asked the Buddha –

“When do you play your drum”,

and the Buddha replied, “When someone makes a great sacrifice”.

Then the rich man went to find a gift for Buddha as a sacrifice.

He found a tree in his garden full of ripe pomegranates… he put two in his bag.

When an old hungry lady came to the rich man begging for food.

He gave the old lady the small fruit.

Then the rich man walked to the Buddha giving him the large fruit.

But Buddha never played his drum.

Later the Buddha was given the small fruit by the old lady.

And Buddha played his drum.

The rich man asked, “Why did you play the drum for the old lady and not for me?”

Buddha replied, “It’s not the quality of the gift that matters, it’s what you hold most dear.

If you’re hungry and give away your last bit of food… that’s a great sacrifice,

Giving away what you have lots of… that’s not a great sacrifice.

Giving away what you hold dear… and need the most… now that’s a great sacrifice!”
