“13 Health Benefits of Shen qu”
Shen qu also known as Massa fermentata medicalis or a medicated leavening agent… is a Chinese mixture of herbs well known for helping with GI tract challenges.
Shen qu is made into a fermented herbal preparation that varies slightly in what it contains depending on the maker. But Shen qu is great for healing away GI tract challenges.
History – Shen qu was invented by Liu Yi from the Han Dynasty who noticed animals with digestive problems and how they ate particular foods to find relief. Thus Liu Yi put together a special combination of fermented herbs and grains to promote good digestion.
Bloating – Shen qu is wonderful for when you eat too much and have that over full feeling… and are just uncomfortable.
Contains – Before fermentation a mixture of beans, grains, nuts, yeast, and herbs are mixed together. After fermentation shen qu contains amylase, glycosides, yeast, monacolin K, lots of B-Vitamins, protein, ergosterol, fat, and a small amount of volatile oils.
Diarrhea – Shen qu is very good for helping with diarrhea by calming the GI tract and soothing irritation.
Studies show that children with diarrhea usually better in no time with shen qu.
Shen qu worked better than modern over the counter drugs for diarrhea… in fact shen qu was found to be 100% effective in healing diarrhea.
Chronic Gastritis – Shen qu works very well for chronic indigestion, but should not be used for those with gastric reflux.
Absorption – Shen qu helps the GI tract absorb more nutrition from food.
Gas – Shen qu soothes the small intestines, stomach, and colon and thus also helps with gas.
Lowers Cholesterol – shen qu works as a cholesterol lowering agent and thus help with cardiovascular disease, strokes, and other diseases.
Chinese Medicine – In Traditional Chinese Medicine shen qu is used for building Qi, harmonizing and strengthening the stomach and spleen. It also promotes digestion and has the properties of being acid, sweet, and warm.
Forms – The fermented mixture is made into small blocks that can be made into tea or fried with bran and other herbs. Most of the time shen qu is used in combination with herbs such as ginger, malt, atractylodes, hawthorn fruit, and prepared rehmannia. She qu is also made into pills in combination with other herbs.
Using – Many times Shen qu is used for tea.
Dose – Recommend dose of shen qu is some where between 4 and 15 grams per day.
Finding – If you go to China Town you will find shen qu in Chinese Markets, also shen qu can be order on-line, just google “Buy Shen qu” and it will come up. Or you can go to your local Traditional Chinese Medical Practitioner and he or she will have Shen qu for sure.
No Side Effects – There are no known side effects, but Shen qu should not to be used for small babies and pregnant women.
