“The Chikungunya Virus is spreading around the world… and here are a few natural ways to make sure you don’t come down with this disease.”
What is Chikungunya – Chikungunya (Pronounced “Chik En Gun Ye”) is a virus which is spread by mosquitoes… and the key is prevention. Chikungunya is spreading in Europe and in just about every area of the world including the US.
Symptoms – Headaches, muscle aches, rashes, fever, joint pain and swelling are all part of the Chikungunya disease.
Water – Mosquitoes need water to breed, any water even the smallest dish of water… or even a jar lid is more than enough for mosquitoes to lay their eggs, hatch larva, and spring forth mosquitos. Emptying all containers and areas with standing water is vitally important… even the smallest amount.
Check Street Drains – Perhaps you have street drains. Make sure these drains are completely dry, we had a street drain near us full of water… and we had to call the city to have them unblock the drain so it was completely dry.
Citronella Grass – There are some plants that keep away mosquitoes including citronella grass which confuses mosquitoes so they can’t find you… and thus can’t bite you.
Plant as many citronella grass plants around your house as possible.
You can pinch off a piece of the root and place it in potting soil and start a new plant in a few days. Thus you don’t have to buy lots of citronella.
Turmeric – In our area we’ve had many people come down with Chikungunya. But I have been taking 3,600 mgs (That’s 6 – 600 mg capsules each day) of turmeric every morning and I’ve have had no problems whatsoever. This is not a scientific study… but it’s works for me.
Believe me I’ve been bitten by mosquitos over the last month. Turmeric is a powerful antimicrobial agent that works to prevent disease… give it a try… and turmeric has many other great benefits.
Neem Oil – Dilute neem oil used as a spray or cream is a natural way to keep biting mosquitos away, and neem oil can also be used in lamps to keep away mosquitos. You can find neem oil at your local garden store… and you can order it on-line.
Marigold Flowers – You can take marigold flowers and leaves and boil them down to make a natural spray for mosquitoes.
Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus keeps away mosquitoes, and some people use Eucalyptus leaves around their house to keep away insects. And Eucalyptus also keeps pets out of your garden.
Garlic – For some reason Garlic keeps insects away. So in a pinch you can rub fresh garlic all over your body and keep mosquitoes away… but it might keep your friends away.
Other Plants – Some other plants that help keep mosquitoes away are lavender, rosemary, feverfew, pennyroyal, mint, catnip, geranium, lemongrass, tea tree, lemon balm… and basil just to name a few.
Public Health – If you have lots of mosquitoes in your area call the public health department. They will fog, spray, and even place small fish that eat mosquito larva in watering troughs and ponds thus keeping mosquitoes down… and it’s all free.
