“Sorghum – Food Source of the Future”

“New research shows sorghum makes a healthy grain and flour that’s very tasty, lowers cholesterol, fights cancer, helps with diabetes, it’s gluten free, plus it needs less water than traditional crops.”

Lowers Cholesterol – Studies feeding sorghum to rodents shows that bad cholesterol or LDL cholesterol is lowered by almost 70% without changing good cholesterol.

Fights Cancer – Studies show that sorghum contains 3-Deoxyanthoxyanins which is great cancer fighting agent. The University of Missouri showed that sorghum is important in fighting the spread of colon cancer. In Africa when tribes switched from growing sorghum to corn there was a huge increase of cancer of the esophagus. And the University of Madrid found sorghum may help with melanoma.

Gluten Free – Sorghum is gluten free making it a very important grain for those suffering from gluten intolerance and celiac disease. Human studies where done and no one in the test suffered from gluten intolerance or celiac disease symptoms. And more studies found in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry also confirmed that sorghum is gluten free.

High in Antioxidants – Sorghum contains more antioxidants than that found in pomegranates and blueberries.

Studies at Texas A & M University showed that sorghum contains a good amount of polyphenols like that found in green tea. These phenolic compounds are important in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, strokes, and cancer.

The University of Georgia found that certain types of sorghum bran was high in polyphenols that prevent and repair DNA damage.

Diabetes – Studies show that some types of sorghum may help with insulin resistance and lower blood sugar. And the fiber and tannins in sorghum balance blood sugar and prevent glucose spikes.

Fiber – Studies show that one serving of sorghum contains almost 1/2 our daily allowance of fiber. Also fiber helps to lower blood sugar, prevent constipation, and provide a good environment for the growth of probiotic bacteria thus boosting our immune system.

Healthy Bones – Studies show that sorghum contains a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium which are important for strong bones and for preventing osteoporosis.

Blood Health – Studies show that sorghum contains almost 60% of our daily needs of copper, plus iron which is important in the production of red blood cells and the prevention of anemia.

Protein – Studies show that sorghum contains almost 1/2 of our daily needs of protein, making it important as good inexpensive food source.

Cardiovascular Health – Sorghum contains potassium which helps with water regulation and cardiovascular health.

Contains Good Fats – Sorghum contains a good source of unsaturated fats and lots of Omega 6 and some Omega 3 oils… plus it’s low in calories, a 1/4 cup of dry sorghum contains about 160 calories.

Niacin – Sorghum contains almost 30% of our daily needs of niacin which is important for vitality and energy…. and it also contains other B vitamins.

Food Grade Sorghum – Farmers in the US are now growing food grade sorghum which is easy to digest.

Food Source of Food for the Future – Sorghum is easy to grow and uses much less water than many other crops like corn and wheat. Together with other grains and foods sorghum can help provide balanced nutrition.

As climate changes sorghum may become a very important food source for the world. We should switch from feeding sorghum to animals and start feeding our ever growing population sorghum flour and grain in combination with other foods.

Other Products – Sorghum can be made into molasses, sorghum syrup, and can be made into alcoholic beverages and biofuels.

Whole Grain Uses and Sorghum Flour – Sorghum can be used for cooking like rice and wheat. Sorghum flour can be made into baked goods such as bread, muffins, pies, and pastries that taste great. Whole grain organic sorghum can be used in casseroles like rice… and substituted for just about any rice or wheat dish. It can also be popped like popcorn.

Another Great Food – Sorghum used in combination with other nutritious foods can round out our diet and provide food for the world.

Finding – If you google “buy sorghum flour, grain, molasses, syrup, and other products” lots of places on-line will come up. Also they can be found on Amazon Vitacost and can be asked for at your local health food store.
