“There is new evidence that meditation can extend our life expectance so we can live longer lives. It seems that meditation can even changes our genes as seen in the study of epigenics through which good genes are turned on and bad genes are turned off. Thus helping to overcome diseases that might be expressed during our life time and mush more.”
But now we know through new studies show that those who meditate have the possibility of a longer life expectancy. As we age our cells divide and chromosomes split and the ends of these chromosomes are telomeres, which as we age become shorter and shorter. Eventually leading to a very short telomeres which relates to very quick aging of the cell, thus we age quickly. And these short telomeres it seems have something to do with the life expectance of those who have breast cancer and other types of cancer. The study was done at the University of Calgary Canada.
The actual long term outcome of meditation, cancer, and life expectancy will take many more studies to determine. But we have so many more things that are happening with meditation.
Take for instance a study that was done with 2 soldiers from the Iraq War who had terrible “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” and one small child who had long standing bouts of anxiety and fear. Within one week (Just 7 Days) of teaching these soldiers simple yoga and meditation their anxiety was down by as much as 42% and their sleep problems dropped by 72%. Those are pretty amazing results for just 7 days of learning simple yoga stretches, breathing, meditation, and relaxing techniques. And one month later those 2 soldiers still had all the benefits of the program and were doing great. In fact they started to smile and they had not smiled for 2 or 3 years. That doesn’t sound like much to us but to those 2 soldiers it was amazing.
The little boy who had terrible anxiety who was only about 5 or 6 years old also was taught yoga and meditation but in a form that anyone even 5 or 6 years old could understand… and his anxiety also melted away. This gives us a whole new way of looking at anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, and mental illness.
Buddha which talked about meditation was really the first psychologist because his emphasis was about suffering, and that our suffering will always be with us until we learn to take control of our mind. Thus teaching us to be mindful and go inward Buddha taught people for years how to find inner peace and end suffering. And even today many psychologists and counselors use the teachings of Buddha in a therapeutic setting to create calm, centeredness, and peace in people who may even be so distraught that they are trying to hurt themselves or even take their own life. And it works, that is the main component of the teachings meditation and mindfulness.
Studies show that as we age our prefrontal cortex becomes thinner which is normal. But those who log in many hours of meditation don’t have thinning of their cortex in fact they have a enlargement of their prefrontal cortex. Just the opposite of what should be happening as we age. Thus meditation makes our brains bigger, and keeps our brains from naturally aging… and allows us to be mentally healthy and vital, even into our 80’s, 90’s, and even longer.
Just about anyone can understand we get a bigger brain if we meditate, and that’s a good thing and everyone wants a bigger brain. And they also want a bigger brain for their children. And having a bigger brain is great, but those who meditate also have the hippocampus and the amygdala those parts of the brain that controls emotions also become thicker and able to respond better to emotional situations.
In fact those who’ve had some kind of trauma such as “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” or some other kind of trauma have a thinner hippocampus and amygdala areas in their brain. This has been scientifically shown with precise measurements on MRI and CT scans. Not only that, but those who practice meditation also seem to have a greater capacity for compassion than those who don’t meditate.
Many think of Buddhism as just another type of religion, but in reality there is only a small part of the group who practice Buddhism that see it only as a true religion with a deity. One third see it as a religion, one third see it as a way of life, and one thirds see it as a social economic process. Thus Buddhism is a multifaceted process that can be used in whatever fashion that it fits into ones life. And now we have the scientific aspect that brings about the use of meditation for the process of healing into lives without any hint of religion.
Meditation is the scientific discovery of the century that will revolutionize the way we look at the mind. Because we need to have a basis for the mind, to bring about good health. No one talks about preventative medicine for the mind, and that’s exactly what meditation is all about… a way of bringing about stability of the mind and creating freedom from emotional upheaval.
Thus there is less mental suffering in the world and compassion blooms and the world takes on a whole new look from the inside out.
