Disease Can Be Healed with Meditation
There are some fundamental reasons why meditation is extremely healing. Healing for the mind, healing for the physical body, and healing of our spiritual essence, thus allowing us to heal physically in a very interesting way. Here are a few reasons why we need to meditate for great health.
First of all our mind is always working day in and day out. Even while we are sleeping our mind is still going strong. While people are dreaming their electroencephalograms or EEG’s are very active, and sometimes even more active than during waking hours. This means that our brain never gets a rest, that our brain never has the ability to shut itself off. Meditation is the only time that the brain shuts down for a while in order to heal itself… and also the body at the same time.
Here are some EEG’s of my own brain while in normal waking state and during meditation. During waking consciousness we have lots of activity going on in the brain, and during meditation as illustrated in the photo all the activity is basically shut down. Thus the mind takes a short vacation from thinking and finds peace. Studies show that during meditation all stress is derailed and thus blood pressure drops, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline disappear, and our immune system is given a boost because it doesn’t have all the stress hormones in the way creating havoc with our bodies. Plus our heart EKG lowers to a natural soothing rhythm instead of being erratic. This is what the Heart Math Institute has been working on for years and have come up with some great ways to the body. The body is able to heal itself because all the stress hormones are gone and thus inflammation is lowered allowing for greater healing to ensue.
Also all emotional pollution disappears, and this type of pollution creates anxiety, stress, and emotional upheaval. All of which lead to dis-ease… which in the long run translates into high blood pressure, cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and much more. And when all the emotional pollution disappears all lack of vitality, dullness, and lethargy are a thing of the past… thus healing our mind.
Dr. Herbert Benson who was doing research at Harvard University found that when people started doing meditation lots of different types of illnesses started do disappear including arthritis, hypertension, fatigue, nervousness, ulcers, infertility, angina, asthma, herpes, constipation, PMS, headaches, migraines, backaches, joint problems, muscular pain, neck pain, arm pain, leg pain, rashes, depression, allergic reactions, swelling and pain in general.
This is quite an impressive list, and it’s just a beginning, because symptoms of just about every disease started to diminish. In fact if a person’s blood pressure is taken before meditation and after meditation there will be a marked decrease in blood pressure every time… sometimes as much as 20 to 30 points lower than without meditation. Thus all of this adds up to a powerful process for healing the physical body. Let alone new studies about epigenics that shows that meditation can also change our genetics by turning off bad genes and turning on good genes.
Not only that… but there’s a large increase in blood flow to the prefrontal cortex of the brain. That area of the brain which is associated with cognitive abilities and emotional stability by overriding the more basic reptilian brain. Thus bringing about peaceful feelings, contentment, and feelings of well-being… which in the long run also brings about healing to our spirit. Just about any one that has been doing meditation can attest to a feeling of bubbling between the eyebrows. Which probably is connected to the increased blood flow to that prefrontal cortex and the increased thickening of that area… which corresponds to increasing cognitive abilities.
Taking the time to meditate for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening can change life forever.
