“How Repressed Memories and Smells Trigger Health Challenges”

“A True Story About How Memories Cause Health Problems”

Once there was a young man who was helping someone out of the freezing rain and gave them dry clothing to wear and a hot meal. Because their car broke down in the middle of an ice storm in front of their house. And he remembered a smell of moldy clothing. And two days later the owner of the house came down with a terrible rash, he was sneezing and itching and could not stop himself from scratching all over and created red marks on his neck and arms from scratching so hard.

Finally his wife took him to their family doctor and he gave the man a prescription for Benadryl that helped with the itching. And the doctor did all kinds of allergy tests, blood work, checked for toxins, and everything the doctor could think of. A week later the man was still scratching and sneezing, but at least the Benadryl made him drowsy enough that he could sleep at night.

This went on for weeks, and his doctor did not know what do, so he put the young man in the hospital for a week. Even at the hospital they could not find a cause of the irritation. But he could no longer stay at the hospital if they could not find a cause… and so they shipped him home. But his family physician had a hunch that something else was causing this problem. So he set up and appointment with a counselor to talk to the young man, to see if there was something else going on that was triggering his rash and sneezing.

The first visit with the counselor was not fruitful because the young man didn’t understand why he was doing in counseling for a rash and sneezing. He thought the whole thing was a bunch of manure. But he reluctantly went back to the counselor again and again because he wanted to find a cure for his terrible itching. And of course the counselor started asking questions about his childhood and finally hit upon a time when the young man was 6 years old and how older kids were egging him on to walk across thin ice on a very deep pond. And all of a sudden the little boy broke through the ice and dropped into the icy water and down to the bottom of the pond. And all he could think about was how cold it was and how dark it was. Then all of a sudden one of the older boys who was there, bent down over the hole in the ice and grabbed the back of his coat and dragged him out.

Cold, freezing, and wet, the other boys finally got the little boy to the hospital where they slowly warmed him up. And all the little boy could remember is the smell of wet moldy clothing, and how angry he was at the other boys for daring him to walk across the pond. And how angry he was at himself for taking the dare and doing what they said. And at that very moment, the counselor looked at the young man and noticed he was not sneezing, scratching, and that his rash was starting to look a little less red… as though it was starting to heal.

And a few days later after remembering the connection between the moldy smell and the anger. And about being dared to walk across a frozen pond when he was 6 years old… his rash totally disappeared. And there was no need for medications, no need for herbs, no need for anything, except to remember how mad he was at those kids and how mad he was at himself. And finally he let go of the past and healed the past by forgiving everyone… forgiving the kids and himself.

It’s amazing how something as simple as a smell can trigger changes in the body. Memories are powerful, and especially memories of smells that trigger all kinds of good and not so wonderful processes in our mind/body. Many of us take this for granted but lots of our health challenges are just that… memories that need to be healed in order to bring about the healing of the body via the mind.
