“Spiritual Peace = Controlling our Mind”

Dr. Paul Haider - 1In order to have whatever we want, we must first control our mind. Think about Sir Edmond Hillary the mountain climber climbing Mount Everest. It’s a long arduous journey and there are many obstacles in the way, such as crevasses, icy cliffs, lack of oxygen, and with great heights every step feels like a person is moving tons of concrete. A person of normal mind would never make it to the summit. But a person with conviction who has learned to control his mind will make it to the top. It’s more than just a trek to the top of a mountain it’s also a spiritual trek of mind control.

Think about the Dalai Lama, losing his country, having millions of people follow him into exile, being a stranger in a strange land which offered him a safe haven. And through all of this he was and still is at peace. In fact he wants peace for the world… and that’s why many see him an icon of peace. But this too takes mind control, and the Dalai Lama is great advocate of meditation.

And the great African long distance runner Haile Gebrselassie broke lots of marathon records. To keep running fast for hour after hour, mile after mile, takes great mind control. Even with training, even with good genetics it takes controlling the mind to make it through such a grueling race. Thus Haile was able to bring his mind under control in order to become a legend.

What about Dr. Desmond Tutu? A person of great conviction that never gave up. Even in the face of great destruction, killings, people being put in prison… he never gave up. It took great mind control to not allow fear to overcome a him and take over his life. I had the great privilege of meeting Dr. Tutu. He’s a man of small stature, but his voice and way of being convey a feeling of power and great peace… but also great control.

On a personal note… a while back I fell off the roof and broke my foot in the joint that connects the foot to the ankle bones. I had surgery and ended up with 11 screws and a plate in my foot. And when I woke up the pain was excruciating. They gave me morphine, but morphine didn’t do a thing. They gave me pain medication to take home and that helped a little. And about 2 AM there were twelve people were gathered around my bed worried about me… and I told then to go home. I told them that I was going to have to go inside and deal with the pain, and so I started meditating and the pain started to disappear. Later I began to take complete control of the pain and dial the pain down to almost nothing with my mind. So again in order to have spiritual peace… mind control was very important.

When people have difficulties in their relationship, it takes mind control. People can lash out and say terrible things, but that does not help a relationship. In fact one has to go inward to find true peace to bring that feeling back to the relationship. Cooperation and caring cannot be found without controlling the mind. Thus learning to go inward with meditation, contemplation, and being in nature are important.

Many times people work with people who are difficult, and it takes great mind control not to lash out at the boss, employees, and coworkers. It also takes great mind control to find peace and happiness in a job where person is doing the same thing… over and over again. But it can be done and has been done for thousands of years. In fact I remember being in Costa Rica renting a cabin near some waterfalls. And there was a grounds keeper who took care of the large yard, he had worked there for years. But everyday he would walk around cleaning and singing a happy song. He was happy even though he made very little money, and things were not always great. That takes great mind control.

Taking care of our mind, our body, our spirit, our relationships, or even our work life takes great mind control. To overcome our natural tendencies and become more like God. Thus we find the true reality of who we are deep down inside which is great peace.

And through meditation, prayers, being in nature, and many other ways, we find peace and become ONE with God, the Universe, and the One and Only.

But it all takes great mind control…

mind control is the cornerstone of spiritual peace.
