Water Caltrop is special Asian Water Chestnut that is full of great health benefits that many people don’t know about. Also known as Singhara,Trapa bikornis nut, Bat Nut, Ling Nut, Wing Pod, Indian Water Chestnut, and Pani-phal, and other names this delicious water nuts have a wonderful nutty flavor that everyone will enjoy… and they should not be confused with regular water chestnuts.
Where Found – These great tasting chestnut are aquatic plants that can be found in Africa, Asia, India, China, Australia and other parts of the world. And they are grown as a cash crop in China and India in modern times and they have been used as a food source for over 3,000 years. And these water weeds also grow in the US on the Eastern Seaboard from the North East and as far south as Florida.
Must Be Cooked – Water Caltrops contain toxins that must be cooked to be eliminated. And some water flukes can also be found in water caltrop so they must be cooked before eating to make sure they are toxin and fluke free. These delicious nuts should be boiled in salty water for 20 to 25 minutes. They can also be fried or roasted and then dried and made into a rich gluten free flour for baking.
Great Taste – The taste of Water Caltrop is similar to peanuts, brazil nuts, and chestnuts… they are very tasty.
Rich in Nutrients – Water Caltrop contains lots of good carbs, they are cholesterol free and their very low in fats, contain some protein, and also some fiber for to promoting the growth of probiotic bacteria.
