Once upon a time two twin brothers lived in India. One was very rich, for he decided that he would never be as poor like his parents and thus he became very ruthless and greedy. The other brother was totally different, he went to temple and prayed everyday, meditated for long periods of time, and worked part time at a small grocery store doing odd jobs. And whenever he wasn’t working or meditating he was helping all the poor people in the area.
The one brother worked his way up in finance and became well known as a businessman and had many people working under him. But he was always looking behind him because he had many enemies, because he had destroyed the livelihoods of many people with hostile takeovers companies. Thus in general he didn’t trust anyone, even his closed friends where just people he used to make his way up the social ladder. But he had a large house, a great wife and four kids, and lots of servants. And they were always busy traveling for business and pleasure.
The other brother lived a very simple life, he always said he needed next to nothing in the way of material things. And the only thing that really mattered was God. For he was a very devoted believer in God, and all the great avatars who had come spreading the word about love. And this brother had many spiritual experiences that changed his life. In fact one night two weeks after his father past away his father’s spirit came to him. It was as if his father was there in the flesh, but the whole room was lit up with a great white light around his father, and his father said “Be humble, live a simple life, love God, and help others” and then the spirit of his father disappeared. And he knew this was not an hallucination for he was totally awake and could smell the cologne that his father was wearing. And that was just the tip of the iceberg, he had many other spiritual experiences that also showed him without a doubt that we are spiritual beings.
Then one day the stock market took a huge dip and the brother with all the money lost everything. He lost all the companies he had, all his land, all his money, and even his home. And at that point his wife left and took the kids with her, and left him all alone. And even his friends didn’t call him or try to connect with him. They didn’t want to have a thing to do with him now that he was broke. He was desperate, he didn’t know what to do. So he called his brother and pleaded and the brother took him in and gave him a room in his humble home.
There the brother who lost his money broke down and cried, for he thought his life was over. But his brother consoled him, and told him he could start over and make a new life. And thus the humble brother found a job for his brother working in the grocery store. And he took care of his brother for four years while he worked and tried to recoup what he had lost. Yet all the time that he spent with his humble brother started to rubbing off on him. He could see that is brother was happy, that he really didn’t need much of anything, and that his happiness had nothing to do with material things. So he became very interested as to why is brother was happy with nothing and asked his brother “Why are you so happy all the time” and his brother replied “My happiness comes from my heart, from the God the resides in my heart who reminds me to be grateful at all times”.
And thus the brother who was down on his luck started to emulate his brother by going to temple, meditating, praying and helping others. And he started to build a new life. Not a life like the one he had, but a life full of love from the inside out, thus everything changed in his life from that point on.
