Salvia Root or Dan Shen in Chinese Medicine and also known as Salvia miltiorrhiza can open up coronary arteries, lower blood pressure, ease inflammation, prevent atherosclerosis, lower cholesterol, prevent strokes, promote the regeneration of liver and kidney cells, and even helps with diabetes, and it’s been used for thousands of years.


Where it Grows – Salvia root and also known as Chinese red sage grows in Asia and is common in Mongolia. Salvia root has been extensively used in China, Japan, and in the US.

Prevents Blood Vessel Inflammation – Salvia root has been shown to prevent inflammation of all the major and minor blood vessels of the body including the coronary arteries. Thus helping to prevent plaque formation and heart attacks.

Promotes Good Circulation – Salvia root helps to increase blood flow in every area of the body thus helping to increase perfusion of nutrients into tissues.

Prevents Atherosclerosis – Salvia root also helps to prevent atherosclerotic tissue from being formed in all the major blood vessels.

A study done at Yamanashi Medical University in Japan showed that salvia root extract worked just as well as calcium channel blockers for getting rid of angina. And salvia root has been shown to be just as effective as nitroglycerin for improving heart function.

Cancer Prevention – Studies in the Journal of Ethopharmacology found that salvia root may be able to protect a person from many types of cancer, more studies to be done.

Dose – The normal dose for salvia root as a powder is from 3 to 15 grams daily, but as a concentrated decoction from 1 to 4 grams daily. As with all herbs salvia root should only be used for 7 to 10 days and then taking a break for a week and then returning if needed.

Forms – Salvia root can be found as powders, decoctions, tinctures, capsules, and pills.

Side Effects – Salvia root is a powerful blood thinning agent and thus should not be taken by people using blood thinning medications. As always women who are pregnant, nursing, or small children should not take salvia root.
