Food Is Stronger than Genes in Cancer Risk
Dietary choices contribute to colorectal cancer risk more than genetic factors, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. Researchers followed 4,080 participants from the MCC-Spain case-control study and analyzed risk factors, including red meat and vegetable intake and cancer rates. Changes in lifestyle, such as achieving a healthful weight or consuming less meat and more vegetables, influence cancer risk more than genetics. The authors hope these findings lead to more effective treatment and prevention.

Soy Linked to Breast Cancer Survival
Intake of soy by breast cancer patients is associated with improved survival rates, according to a study published in Cancer. Researchers followed 6,235 breast cancer patients and monitored diet records and mortality rates. Women with hormone-receptor-negative tumors who consumed the highest amounts of isoflavones from soy reduced their risk of dying from cancer by 21 percent over the course of 9.4 years, compared with those who consumed the least amount. These data lend credence to dietary interventions to improve survivability.

Saturated Fat Increases Risk for Early Death
Saturated and trans fats increase your risk of death from several conditions, according to a study published online in JAMA Internal Medicine. Researchers continually monitored dietary fat intake and mortality for 83,349 women and 42,884 men from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, respectively. Those who consumed more saturated and trans fats increased their mortality risk from heart disease, cancer, and cognitive diseases when compared to those who consumed more unsaturated fats. These findings support recommendations to limit foods high in saturated fat, including animal products and vegetable oils, in favor of low-fat, plant-based foods.
