Used for Hundreds of Years… this is a small tree or shrub that the Native Americans chewed on the bark for aches, pains, arthritis, for toothaches, and more.

“Northern Prickly Ash— A Powerful Native American Healing Agent” – “Great for Arthritis, Aches and Pain, Cramps, Poor Circulation, Inflammation, Digestive Issues, Sore Throats, Toothaches, and No Side-Effects”
Other Names – Also known as Zanthoxylum americanum, Toothache Tree, Northern Prickly-ash, Pepper Wood, Suterberry, Angelica Tree, Clavalier à Feuilles de Frêne, Clavalier, Clavalier d’AmériqueClavalier Frêne, Frêne Épineux du Nord, and Frêne Épineux.
Where it Grows – All over the Central US especially in the Eastern part of the US and Canada. It loves wooded areas and ravens. Prickly Ash has yellowish to orange flowers with green to reddish-brown small fruits.
Parts Used – The bark of the plant is used for making tea. But leaves, flowers, fruit, and roots can also be used.
Taste – Acidic and slightly bitter taste with a nice citrus smell.
Aches and Pains – Native Americans would make a tea of the leaves and stems and use that for average aches and pains.
Elderly Pain, Arthritis, and Strength – Native Americans would also give this tea to their elderly people internally to give them strength and to get rid of their long term aches, arthritis, and pains.
Chippewa Native Americans and Bathing in this Tea – The Chippewa Native Americans would make prickly ash tea to bath the legs of their elderly in order to get rid of long term aches, arthritis, and pains.
The Algonquin Native Americans and Strong Tea – They would make a large pot of strong tea using 2 cups of prickly ash fresh or dried and 2 liters of water and let it cook down to 1/2 the liquid. And then drink of this freely to work up a sweat and then jump in a nearby stream. This never failed to get rid of all their aches and pains and rid their body of toxins. It also helped with arthritis, joint pain, and lower back pain.
Heals Abdominal Pain – The Native Americans also used Prickly Ash to get rid abdominal pains… taken internally or soaking a cloth in the tea and placing it on the abdomen.
Contains – Prickly Ash contains essential oils, alkaloids such as fagarine, magnoflorine, chelerythrine, nitidine, laurifoline, plus tannins, berberine, and coumarins, and the alkylamide Neoherculin and xanthoxylin.
Healing Leg Cramps – Prickly Ash tea also helps get rid of leg cramps.
Helps with Poor Circulation – Prickly Ash tea also helps to increase circulation and thus increase healing.
Varicose Veins – Prickly Ash tea also helps with healing varicose veins.
For Toothache Pain – Take a cotton ball and soak it in Prickly Ash tincture and hold it against the painful tooth.
Helps with Pain – Taking Prickly Ash tea helps to soothe away the pain.
Great for Inflammation – Also Prickly ash tea because of the tannins and oils help with inflammation.
Good Detoxing Agent – Prickly Ash tea is a great detoxing agent for the whole body and the liver.
Great for Acne and Eczema – Prickly Ash tea also improves skin conditions such as acne and eczema by getting rid of toxins. You can find creams and ointments that contain Prickly Ash which also helps topically.
Lowers Fevers – Prickly Ash tea also works wonders for lowering fevers.
Soothes the GI Tract and Stimulates Digestion – Prickly ash tea also helps to soothe the GI tract and calms stomachaches and indigestion and stimulates digestion. Prickly Ash tea contains herculin which soothes mucous membranes and helps us to absorption of nutrients.
Great for Gas – If you suffer from GI gas take the tea once a day.
Dry Mouth – Take a couple of drops of tincture or a little bit of powder and hold it in the mouth until absorbed and this will help greatly for dry mouth.
For Sore Throats and Mouth Sores – Gargling with Prickly Ash tea can soothe away sore throats and mouth sores.
Can Be Use With – Prickly Ash can be used in combination with ginger, bayberry, and devils claw for healing aches, pains, and irritations.
Making Prickly Ash Tea – To make Prickly Ash tea take 2 teaspoons of the fresh or dried bark and simmer in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes and drink 1 cup 3 times a day.
Dose – Take Prickly Ash tea 3 times a day. As a tincture take 2 to 4 ml 3 times a day. In capsules take 1 – 400 mg capsule for 7 to 10 days.
Forms – Can be found as dried bark, powder, oils, tinctures, capsules, and more.

No Side-Effects – There are really no side-effects if used in normal doses. It’s been used for hundreds of years… and we yet to have any reported cases of side-effects. But large doses may cause vomiting and nausea… and Prickly Ash does contain blood thinning agents. And those who are pregnant, nursing, or small children should not take Prickly Ash.
